Lilongwe, June 17, Mana: Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba has resigned as a member of Malawi Congress Party's (MCP)  National Executive Committee (NEC).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mumba said the decision was made so he can focus on other matters, but emphasized that he remains a loyal member of the party.

Mumba has expressed dissatisfaction with NEC's composition, stating that 80 percent of co-opted members did not express interest in contesting during the convention and did not pay for nomination fees.

“Despite the resignation from the NEC, I  reaffirm my loyalty to the party and  pledge to campaign for Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in the September general elections,” he said.

In 2024, Mumba contested at the MCP convention but was not successfully elected, however, he was later appointed as a member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
