Moyo said last season's survival rate was at 75 percent expressing hope that this season they will reach up to 80 percent.

“To achieve this, we will continue working with Village Natural Resources Management Committees (VNRMCs) to encourage them to take care of tree seedlings apart from encouraging head teachers to allocate one tree to allow a learner to plant and care for a planted tree seedling until it is well established,” he said.

Chairperson for Zemba Catchment Committee, Mackson Mawerenga from Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre, said his group was committed to supporting the exercise by mobilizing more community members to take part in planting and caring for trees to ensure high survival rate.

We are going to take care of these seedlings so that they can protect us from natural disasters like floods and droughts once they grow into trees. Among other benefits, we will get firewood from the trees,” said Mawerenga.

Mawerenga Catchment Committee has arranged meetings with people in the community, through the village heads, to encourage communities to plant trees and intends to further sensitize communities on the importance of trees.

Mzimba, February 5, Mana: Public Relations Manager for Northern Region Water Board (NRWB), Edward Nyirenda says vandalism of water infrastructure in Mzimba south poses great danger to sustainable provision of potable water to communities.

Nyirenda’s remarks are coming in the wake of reports that some unknown criminals are tampering with water transmission line in the district.

According to the Board’s Scheme Manager for Mzimba, Gregory Mwale, vandals have been targeting water transmission line, particularly the main water line which transmit water from the Machecheta Treatment Plant along the M1 Road to the primary tank located near National Food Reserve Agency office in the district.

‘‘The vandals are tampering with the infrastructure by removing bolts, nuts and metallic clamping strips designed to secure the pipes to concrete pillars, particularly at vulnerable points such as river crossings and gullies,’’ said Mwale.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Nyirenda said the unscrupulous people behind the vandalism risk putting hundreds of community members in Mzimba at risk of dry taps.

Nyirenda said the Board has taken swift and decisive action together with the police to apprehend the suspects.

‘‘We are also embarking on sensitization of the communities along the pipeline to jealously guard the infrastructure and report anyone vandalising it,’’ he said.

Mzimba district Water Officer Jacob Mkandawire noted that water is life and tampering with water infrastructure is the same as killing people.

‘‘This tendency is uncalled for. Let people learn to take care of infrastructure. The destruction of water infrastructure will negatively affect the sustainable provision of water to people. This is regrettable,’’ Mkandawire said.

“We agreed not to spend it but invest in the VSL intervention so that when multiplied we could buy what we would not afford before and we will continue doing so with the subsequent wages,” said Alfred.

After working for 24 days, each of the 17 members receives K28,800 as wages for participating in various tasks such as construction of check dams, gully reclamation, making swalleys, afforestation and natural tree regeneration management when the programme first rolled out last year.

In his remarks, Director of Planning and Development (DPD), Emmanuel Sohaya said one of the objectives of the programme is to ensure that the environment is conserved and at the same time livelihood of the communities is also transformed.

Lilongwe, February 5, Mana: The Malawi National Cancer Centre (MNCC), currently under construction at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, will be completed and ready to take in clients by end of March this year.

Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, announced this on Sunday when she toured the project site to appreciate the ongoing construction works of the facility, as part of commemorating World Cancer Day.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project saying when completed, it will not only save lives of cancer clients, but also help the country save billions of Kwacha spent through referrals of clients to foreign countries for treatment.

"We're very happy with the progress of the construction works. The projection is that by end March this year everything will be completed and the Centre will be ready," said Chiponda.

She added: "This facility is very crucial; Government spends US$15,000 for every cancer client to access treatment outside the country - and that excludes air tickets and accommodation for the client and guardian,”

According to the minister, currently, there are 200 clients on the waiting list to access treatment abroad, thus the completion of the cancer facility will be a relief to the clients and the country as a whole.

The new cancer facility, which is being constructed with funding from the OPEC Fund for International Development and Malawi government, will have six bunkers for cancer treatment, including radiation therapy.

Plem Construction is the contractor undertaking the project and the company's leading engineer on the site, Ajai Mahon, concurred with the minister on the estimated date for completion of the works.

Mahon said, so far, everything regarding the construction works is in order and that they're waiting for more equipment from Turkey.

Malawi registers over 18,000 new cases of cancer annually and, presently, the country provides oncology, including chemotherapy and palliative care services for cancer clients.
