Lilongwe, February 2nd, Mana: Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has called on Traditional Leaders to promote unity among the people in their areas in order to foster development.
He made the call on Saturday at Kabudula primary school ground during the installation of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabudula and elevation of Group Village Headman Namaguya and Zakaliya to Sub-Traditional Authorities respectively.
“Traditional Leaders are the custodians of development, social cohesion and cultural heritage preservation. These can only be achieved where there is unity,” he said.
Chimwendo Banda then condemned some traditional leaders who engage themselves in corruption scams that have potential to destroy the much needed development their subjects are in need of.
“Let me remind you, as Traditional Leaders, you should be instrumental in bringing development projects in your area such as bridges, clinics, markets and many more for the betterment of your subjects,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of all Traditional Leaders, Senior Chief Khongoni thanked government for intervening in the chieftaincy wrangles that erupted among the Kabudula family since 2020.
“As you can see, the people in this area are now happy for having their own chief, all I can say is that, let the new chief bring unity among the people here and forget the past,” she said.
Member of Parliament for the area Monica Chang’anamuno who is also the Minister of Defense, thanked government for installing the new chief saying it was very difficult to work with the people in the area due to lack of leadership.
Chayang’anamuno then urged the newly elevated chief to be exemplary to his subjects in preserving cultural values.
