Rumphi June 12, Mana: Six people have died in a road accident involving a Toyota Hiace minibus registration number MN 146 at Chiweta in Rumphi on Tuesday.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Rumphi Police Publicist, Noel Kamchenga said the minibus was traveling from Karonga heading towards Mzuzu.
"Upon arrival at Kesha area, the driver, Charles Mwafulirwa failed to control the vehicle as it ascended the Chiweta Hills. Henceforth, it started rolling backwards and went to the far nearside where it overturned several times before falling into a gorge,” he said.
He said due to the impact, a female passenger and three male passengers including Kumwenda died on the spot.
“Another passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rumphi District Hospital while the other one died while receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.
One passenger was admitted at the district hospital while the conductor and nine other passengers were treated as outpatients at Jalawe Health Centre and Rumphi District Hospital respectively, according to Chirwa.
He said full particulars of the victims were not yet established.
