Nsanje, August 21, Mana: Member of Parliament for Nsanje South West, Eurita Mtiza challenged Women Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC) and Oxfam to address barriers that hinder marginalized groups from participating in politics if Malawi wishes to achieve the 50-50 aspirations

Mtiza made the statement on Wednesday after an engagement meeting with political aspirants in Nsanje organized by WORLEC and Oxfam.

“There is a need to also engage political structures and traditional leaders as sometimes they do not level the playing field. This destroys the political ambitions of marginalized groups like women, “she added.

Mtiza said engagement meetings were critical, as they would encourage women, youth and people with disability to go into politics.

“We have a lot of women, youths as well as people with disability that can contribute positively to the social economic development of our nation but they are blocked by political structures, “she added.

One of the participants, Mphamvu Kalima who is vying for the position of ward councilor said the engagement meeting was fruitful as it encouraged women, the youth and people with disability, to participate in politics actively.

“We want such kind of engagement to be taken to chiefs and political parties so that they should understand that people with disability like me should be given an equal platform to compete in key political positions,” she added.

The District Gender Officer in Nsanje, Edson Njembe praised Oxfam and WORLEC for the timely engagement adding that the engagements will encourage more marginalized groups to actively participate in politics.

“As a district, we need to promote this campaign so that we can contribute to the 50-50 campaign to see good representation of women both in parliament and in the full council,” he added.

Oxfam and WOLREC are implementing a project called Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth Inclusion Democracy in Malawi which rolled out in 2023 and is expected to end in 2027.

The project is implemented in seven districts of Salima, Dedza, Mulanje, Nsanje, Machinga, Rumphi and Mzimba with support from the European Union.

By Lisa Lamya

Blantyre, August 21, Mana: Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda Wednesday said Malawi is alert on the Mpox disease, which was recently declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Kandondo made the sentiments in Blantyre on the sidelines of a supervision visit at QECH to monitor the progress of the work on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) at the microbiology lab.

"We have already engaged WHO and Africa Center for Disease Control (Africa CDC) to ensure that Malawi receives Mpox vaccine so that people are protected from the disease,” said Chiponda.

Gwengwe Advocates for strong trade ties

By Gift Chiponde

Lilongwe, August 21, MANA: Minister of Trade and Industry Sosten Gwengwe has encouraged Indian investors to explore opportunities in Malawi’s manufacturing sector, emphasizing the necessity for the country to enhance the value of its commodities to facilitate exports.

Gwengwe made the remarks on Wednesday during his speech at the India-Africa Business Conclave's Special Plenary Session in New Delhi, currently in progress in India.

Highlighting the escalating trade relationship between Malawi and India, Gwengwe acknowledged India as a pivotal export destination for Malawian commodities like pigeon peas, soybeans, mangoes, macadamia nuts, chilies, groundnuts, and pulses.

He underscored the urgent need for value addition in these exports, extending a cordial invitation to Indian manufacturing companies to make substantial investments in Malawi's Manufacturing industry to effectively support the government in realizing the President's Vision of Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) Strategy.

While recognizing India’s significant role as a source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Malawi, with Indian investments prominently present in agriculture, trading, textiles, tourism, health, and ICT sectors, Gwengwe also highlighted several challenges impeding trade, such as high tariffs on key exports like mangoes and macadamia nuts.

Gwengwe further advocated for enhancements in preferential tariff schemes for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) like Malawi to amplify trade benefits.

He also expressed concerns regarding inadequate production in existing value chains and logistical hurdles encountered by land-linked Malawi in the transportation of goods to and from India.

He pressed for the establishment of consistent trading arrangements with minimal barriers, underscoring the necessity for decisive actions by relevant authorities to address these issues.

Reiterating Malawi’s commitment to fortifying its strategic partnership with India, especially amidst evolving global circumstances, Gwengwe invited Indian investors to leverage Malawi’s stable political environment and peace-loving populace, assuring them of lucrative returns on their investments.

He extended gratitude to the Government of India for their gracious hospitality and commended the event organizers for providing a platform to deliberate on pivotal trade and manufacturing industry-related matters, which, he emphasized, would significantly aid the government in realizing the President's Vision of Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) Strategy.

Blantyre, August 21, Mana: Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda has called on local authorities never to give in to political pressure on the choice of contractors as experience has shown that the pressure compromises procurement processes that in turn affect project implementation.

The minister made the call on Wednesday at Golden Peacock in Blantyre where the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, local authorities in the southern region and development partners met for a quarterly coordination meeting.

Chimwendo said quarterly meetings were ideal for the local authorities and development partners’ performance in service delivery, adding that the meetings provide space for the local authorities to learn from each one another and to discuss areas of improvement on service delivery to satisfy citizens’ development aspirations.

The minister observed delayed procurement processes in most local authorities thereby delaying implementation of projects at the expense demand driven development and called on the district commissioners, chief executive officers and their staff to ensure procurement processes are done with reasonable speed for efficiency and effective service delivery.

He however acknowledged political interference on issues of procurement in local authorities where some politicians impose contractors of their choice to carry out development activities.

Apart from ministry officials, District Commissioners, council directors of finance, planning and development and directors of public works, members of parliament from the southern region, ward councilors; mayors from Blantyre and Zomba cities and Luchenza Municipal Council attended the two days quarterly coordinating meeting.

To this effect, the minister called on members of parliament and other influential politicians to stop intervening procurement processes in local authorities, saying the interference has the potential to delay procurement of contracts that are meant to facilitate projects in local authorities.

“Delayed procurement processes frustrate development and this in turn defeats quality service delivery. Don’t allow politicians to interfere in your work,” the minister told District Commissioners and their directors and disclosed that donors through government Enabled to Service Delivery (GESD) project will provide 40 million US Dollars for the implementation of various projects in local authorities across Malawi.

He therefore called on local authorities to improve financial management and procurement procedures to put the donor support to good use for the good of the citizens.

Banda said Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture was trying to deploy adequate and qualified staff in local authorities for efficiency in the wake of continued inflow of donor support.

“We want to move in the right direction to satisfy development aspirations of the citizens that always look forward to quality service delivery,” he added.

On political interference, Thyolo District Commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga acknowledged the trend saying “It indeed compromises procurement procedures and timely and quality service delivery,”

He however said there was a need to stick to procurement guidelines to ensure no political interference and other factors that affect implementation development projects.

“We will always reason with politicians to listen to us and spare us space to do the right procurement process. Procurement has procedures to be followed and it takes good procedures to do good procurement,” Kuphanga added.

During the Regional Quarterly Coordination Meeting several presentations were made by local authorities on issues ranging from financial management to climate change resilience.

Ministry of Education, National Aids Commission, Non-Governmental Organizations Regulatory Authority (NGORA) among others also made their presentations on policy guidance to enhance coordination in the local authorities.

Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Owen Chomanika opened the meeting on Tuesday and closed it on Wednesday with a call to all local authorities in the southern region to coordinate with all development partners for effective service delivery in their respective areas.

Quarterly meeting in the southern region is part of a series of regional quarterly meetings with other meetings to be held in Dowa and Mzuzu where delegates from local authorities will also discuss coordination as key to quality service delivery
